Lunging is a cornerstone of horse training — it builds fitness, suppleness, and obedience without a rider. The right equipment keeps you safe and your horse comfortable while you work.
What to Look For
- Lunge line: 8-10m, with a comfortable handle and a swivel to prevent twisting
- Lunge whip: the right length for your horse’s size — it’s an aid, not a punishment
- Lunge roller or surcingle: for side reins and training aids
- Gloves: non-negotiable — a rope burn from a lunge line is serious
Our Advice
Learn to lunge properly before you do it — a horse on a circle can build up surprising speed, and a loose line is dangerous. Start with walk and trot, and keep sessions short.
