A well-stocked first aid kit is the difference between a minor issue and an emergency. Every yard should have one — and every owner should know how to use it. The kit is only useful if you can find it fast and know what’s inside.
What to Look For
- Thermometer: digital, with a string attachment — know your horse’s normal temperature
- Stethoscope: for checking heart rate and gut sounds
- Wound care: antiseptic solution, sterile dressings, gamgee, and vet wrap
- Bandaging: padding, conforming bandages, and duct tape
- Emergency contacts: your vet’s number, and the nearest equine hospital

Take a first aid course — knowing what to do before the vet arrives genuinely saves horses. And check your kit every season; dressings expire and supplies run out.
