An organized feed room prevents mistakes — and feeding mistakes are among the most common causes of colic. Clear labeling, secure storage, and a simple routine keep your horses safe and your feed fresh.
What to Look For
- Feed bins: rodent-proof, labeled, with scoops that stay in each bin
- Supplements: airtight containers, labeled with the horse’s name
- Hay storage: dry, off the ground, and well-ventilated
- Feeding chart: written down — never rely on memory
Our Advice
Keep a feeding chart on the wall and update it whenever anything changes. If more than one person feeds, make the chart the single source of truth. And store feed in sealed bins — a rat in the feed room is a health risk to every horse.
